Writer: Annick Smith

Annick Smith is the author of the memoir Homestead, a collection of essays, In This We Are Native, and a history of the tallgrass prairies, Big Bluestem. She was co-editor with William Kittredge of the Montana anthology, The Last Best Place. Her work has appeared in Story, Outside, Orion, Audubon, Travel & Leisure, and the NY Times Traveler. Smith was executive producer of the film feature, Heartland, and co-producer of A River Runs Through It. Her documentary credits include a public TV series about seven tribes in the Inland Northwest, The Real People, as well as a portrait of poet Richard Hugo, Kicking the Loose Gravel Home.

Smith has taught creative writing at the University of Montana as well as numerous writing workshops and conferences. She is currently completing a dog/memoir/travel book entitled Crossing the Plains with Bruno. She has photo credit Raymond Meeks lived in Montana's Blackfoot Valley for many years.

Join author Annick Smith for classes on Nature and Place based writing techniques. Along with private time for you to focus on your writing, there will be group workshops with Annick throughout the day to seriously focus on writing; please bring notebook, pen, and, if you wish, a short story/essay/poem you would like critiqued.

Trip Itinerary

Day 0 Arrive in Joseph, Oregon. Check in at Chandlers Inn B&B. 6:00 PM, Pre trip meeting, dinner and opening writing session will be held at Fishtrap House in Enterprise (Directions in pre trip information packet). Group introductions, answer last minute questions and discuss trip logistics, check out dry bags for you to pack your personal items in for the trip. After dinner there will be a writing session to prime you for the upcoming days on the river. Your lodging at Chandlers is included in your trip cost.

Day 1: Breakfast served at Chandlers at 6:45am. Departure in WWRE van scheduled for 7:30am. Travel to Hells Canyon Dam through the Wallowa Whitman national Forest, to meet your guides and begin rafting. Lunch will be served on "The River" today. Arrive in riverside camp late afternoon.

Hells Canyon Journaling

Days 2-4: Rafting, writing workshops, personal writing time, exploring the natural and cultural history of Hells Canyon, hiking, relaxation, all punctuated by delicious meals prepared riverside by the guides.

Day 5: Arrive at Dug Bar by lunch time. After lunch you will either board a Jet boat or a small airplane for transportation out of the canyon and back to Joseph, Oregon. Arrive back in Joseph by 5:30pm. Lodging and dinner are on your own this night. If you would like to stay at Chandlers we recommend arranging this in advance.

Included: Transportation to and from The River, all meals beginning with Dinner at Fishtrap on August 18th and ending with Lunch on Day 5, all river equipment, Tents, Sleeping pad, professional and knowledgeable guides, first night lodging at Chandlers Inn, writing workshop sessions.
