Sturgeon can live to be 100 years old and are the largest fresh water fish in North America. The sportfishing record fish was caught in The Dalles, Oregon and weighed 900 pounds.
Only found in significant numbers in three Pacific drainages: Sacramento,
Columbia-Kootenai, and the Fraser. Small populations inhabit some Gulf of
Alaska drainages, and strays from mainland systems have been observed in
the lower reaches of the Cowichan and Somass rivers on Vancouver Island.Distinguishing
features include an exceptionally large size (up to 6m long/600 kg weight),
external bony scutes (plates), skeleton mostly cartilaginous, heterocercal
tail (upper lobe larger than lower lobe), and a long lifespan (up to 100+
years). Reproductive Biology: Females do not typically reach reproductive
maturity until they are 20+ years old, with males reaching maturity earlier
at 14+ years; broadcast spawners (eggs and sperm disbursed into water column);
once mature, they can spawn several times throughout their lifespan.
