Yahoo! Steelhead Caught in Grande Ronde near Troy, Oregon

The fall Grande Ronde River Steelhead season is upon us.  We have been a little concerned about the high temperatures and low water on the Grande Ronde in September preventing Steelhead from making their way up into Oregon.  The water was in the 60’s and flowing below 500cfs for quite some time.  Just this past week we saw the water level rise to about 650cfs and the temps dropped to 50 mid day.  This was great news for us and as we expected caused some Steelhead to start moving.  The bite is finally on.

Key Takeaways

  • Grande Ronde River Steelhead season is heating up — Cooler water temperatures and higher flow rates near Troy, Oregon have finally triggered Steelhead movement, signaling the official start of the fall fishing season.

  • Ideal river conditions matter — The recent drop to around 50°F and flow increase to 650cfs created prime conditions for Steelhead activity after a slow September.

  • Successful lures and techniques — Anglers are reporting bites using swinging flies like the Purple Peril, making it a top choice for fly fishers this season.

  • Fishing near Troy, Oregon is productive again — Local anglers confirm that Steelhead are biting in this stretch of the Grande Ronde River, promising excellent catches through late October.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about fall steelhead fishing on Oregon’s Grande Ronde River and what conditions make for the best catch.

  • When is the best time to fish for steelhead on the Grande Ronde River?

Fall is typically the best season for steelhead fishing on the Grande Ronde River, especially from late September through November. Cooler temperatures and increased river flow help trigger fish movement upstream, improving bite activity near Troy and other popular stretches.

  • What water conditions are ideal for steelhead fishing?

Steelhead are most active when water temperatures are around 50°F and flows are moderate, typically between 600–700 cfs. Warm or low water can slow fish migration, while cooler, higher flows encourage them to move and feed more aggressively.

  • What flies work well for steelhead on the Grande Ronde?

Classic swinging flies such as the Purple Peril, Green Butt Skunk, and Silver Hilton perform well. The Purple Peril, in particular, is known to trigger bites during fall runs when water clarity and flow conditions are favorable.

  • Where is Troy, Oregon, and why is it a good fishing spot?

Troy, Oregon sits near the confluence of the Grande Ronde and Wenaha Rivers. It’s a prime location for anglers because migrating steelhead pause there as they move upriver, making it one of the most reliable fishing areas during fall runs.

  • How has the weather affected the steelhead run this season?

Early in the season, high temperatures and low flows slowed steelhead migration into Oregon. Once the water cooled to around 50°F and flows rose above 600 cfs, fish began moving in, improving the overall catch rate and angler success.

  • What’s included in the Grande Ronde River Supported Steelhead Trip?

The 5-day supported steelhead trip includes guided fishing, river transport, camping accommodations, and meals. It’s designed for anglers who want to experience the river in comfort while maximizing time on productive steelhead waters.

You can reserve your spot by contacting Winding Waters River Expeditions directly through their website or by phone. Availability is limited, especially for guided multi-day trips during peak steelhead season in October and November.

  • Are steelhead still biting later in October?

Yes, steelhead activity often continues through late October as cooler temperatures persist. With flows holding steady and fish already in the system, the bite remains strong well into November for those fishing around Troy and the upper Grande Ronde.

  • What techniques work best for catching steelhead on the swing?

Swinging traditional wet flies with a two-handed Spey rod is a proven method. Focus on smooth, steady swings through deep runs and tailouts. Strikes are often subtle, so maintaining good line tension and staying alert is key.

  • Can beginners join a guided steelhead trip?
